New Zealand vs Tonga

Rugby World Cup 2011

The quest for the Webb-Ellis trophy gets under way in the revamped Eden Park stadium on Friday as the hosts take on one of their "feeder" teams and there is sure to be plenty of partisan support for the Islanders as they take on their cousins.

FEEL IT! IT IS NEARLY HERE! 07 Sep 2011

#RWC2011 kicks off on Friday 9 September 2011 – is it really 4 years since that epic night when the Boks defeated England to win the 2007 edition in France? It seems like yesterday we all ran amok into the wee hours celebrating a most memorable victory for the Rainbow Nation.

And now the 2011 edition is here, back in the land of the long white cloud after 24 years. New Zealand is no doubt bouncing at present – if the experience of FIFA 2010 in South Africa was anything to go by.

The waste of money that is the opening ceremony takes place early on Friday morning South African time followed by the real deal. The might of New Zealand’s All Blacks takes on the tiny island nation of Tonga – not that the players are tiny!

The Tongan's have thus far enjoyed the biggest welcome to New Zealand of all the participating teams and this encounter should have all the hallmarks of a local derby combined with the insane physicality that the Polynesians bring to any game. But it's also a David and Goliath kind of clash – and there's not much chance of David winning this one, although he may damage bits and pieces of Goliath.

Once again the All Black brains trust has made a strange decision in terms of their selections, surely you don't tweak your side at the start of the tournament? Israel Dagg gets the nod ahead of 98 Test Cap veteran Mils Muliaina is one of 9 changes to the side that lost narrowly to Australia in last months Tri-Nations decider. Yes folks 9 changes. The other notables see Sony Bill Williams in for Conrad Smith and Richard Kahui, a centre by design, on the wing. Keven Mealamu is dropped form the match day 22 altogether!

With a total Twitter ban in place for the Kiwi team in the tournament one gets the feeling that the nerves may be jangled and that deathly choke is begging to wrap its fingers around one or two throats!

The other games of the opening round see Scotland play Romania very, very early on Saturday morning South African time, followed by Fiji Nambia – one can't see Romania or Namibia getting anything other than a hiding here.

Then Saturday's big game has two of 2007's semi-finalists, both victims of that majestic Bok march to glory, going head to head. Argentina look to replicate their shock win over France in the opening game of 2007 by putting one over the Poms.

It's unlikely though, the South Americans have only played one Test match this year, while England have had a decent run of warm up games and the 6 Nations to prepare . Besides which one simply can't see a champion like Martin Johnson allowing his charges to fall at the first hurdle.

Tune in to www.2Oceansviberadio.com from 10am as the Blokes on the couch bring you commentary with balls for this one – the first ever Rugby World Cup game broadcast on streaming audio in South Africa - @ThatmanDon with @mediamandean & @carcharius

Then on Sunday just before sunrise in Africa Nick Mallett will send his Italians sprinkled with Aussies, Kiwis and Saffers out to take on the Aussies sprinkled with Kiwis, Tongans, Samoans and even a bloke from Papua New Guinea!

That's followed by Ireland setting their stall out to massacre the USA.

And then it's the one we've all been waiting for – the defending Champions take on the Welsh in Wellington as they begin the defence of their title with no fewer than 18 men in their ranks who've won it all before!

Tune in from 10am on www.2Oceasnviberadio.com as @ThatmanDon with @KapteinKai and @TheChuckSays bring you serious commentary with balls for the Springboks versus Wales – it's going to be huge! MASSIVE!

The Welsh have ruled out their Captain Matthew Rees and have one other major injury concern. Pivot Stephen Jones is in a race against time to be fit while for the Boks the man machine Bakkies “ek doen dit for God” Botha is unlikely to play and Victor Matfield is looking a tad sketchy – we'll know by Friday if the greatest line- out jumper ever will run out at the Cake Tin.

We'll announce the games we are covering on www.2Oceansviberadio.com on a weekly basis – count the Bok games as done, every one of them live on streaming audio – commentary with balls!

We also have one or two Blokes on the ground in New Zealand – we hope to be

able to pry them out of the bars before the odd game to get an idea of the vibe and atmosphere.

If you are playing Rugby World Cup 2011 on www.superbru.com why don't you join the Blokes Super Pool and test your rugby knowledge against the perennial couch dwellers? The Super Pool name is quite simply www.blokesonthecouch.com alternatively the Pool Code is webssine – get in there, tell your mates, you could see your name mentioned here or even on air if you perform well enough! Prizes for the top 3 (excluding the Blokes) will be announced shortly.

You can also catch all your #RWC2011 match preview and reviews on www.blokesonthecouch.com from Thursday 8 September.
